Oil Drain plug Torque?

Is it enough to just tighten the oil drain plug by fingers? I heard you need to be very careful when tightening them back on.

Also how much Ft. Lbs. of toruqe can most people actualy get from just there fingers?Oil Drain plug Torque?
Tighten about 1/4 turn with ';solid metal'; gasket between pan and plug, - and about 1/3 turn formed metal gasket, - or plastic gasket! - This is after you have turned plug in with fingers (if possible) to point it has tightned up and won't turn anymore! If you notice that the gasket is still leaking, - you can tighten it another 1/4 turn. If it leaks after that make sure you put on new gaskert next time you have oil changed (this applies only if it is just ';seepage'; kind of leak), otherwise do it now, -- bearing in mind that all the oil will run out again when you pull the plug to replace seal/gasket!

Never ';jump up and down'; on a long handled wrench putting in a drainplug, - it wil ';strip the threads';. which makes a real mess out of things, sometimes the mechanic can put in an ';oversize'; plug, - but other times it will require removal of oil pan and replaciong it, - which is expensive!

Now if you really want a ';torque value';, - I would guess that it is around 75-100 inch pounds, -- amount of torque #of pounds would exert at one inch away form the center of the drainplug (or 1# at point 75-100 inches away from center of drainplug! You will notice that this is not a real lot of torque on a wrench that is not very long! Divide this by 12, - and you get ';foot pounds';!Oil Drain plug Torque?
Typically you should use a torque wrench to tighten it to the manufacturer's specifications. However after doing it a few times you should be able to get a feel for how much to tighten and not need a torque wrench.
yeah, finger tighten then use wrench or socket and give a couple pushes to make sure its snug! overtightening can depress the washer to the point that it will not seal properly and strip threads.

If you have a torque wrench, most cars are 25 to 30 foot pounds of torque. If you can tell me the vehicle, I can tell you the exact torque spec.
Finger tight is good to be certain you're plug isn't cross threaded..Use a box end wrench not over 6 to 8'; long, to tighten snugly..
