i drive an accord, thanksMy oil plug drain bolt has a tightening spec of 29 foot pounds, is this standard for most vehicles?
all drain plugs differ with the material there screwed into aluminum will strip easyer than steel
the teflon tape works well except on drain plugs with an o ring built into them
there is a gasket maker called ';the right stuff'; that works really well to seal them up as well even the oring ones
snug them up well not tight not loose you will get a feel for them as you do it lots My oil plug drain bolt has a tightening spec of 29 foot pounds, is this standard for most vehicles?
A tightening torque is intended to create a seal using a NEW plug washer. It will often be insufficient if the washer is not replaced.
I have never replaced a washer. I prefer to use plumbers' teflon tape, wound partly around the thread, but mainly in such a fashion it creates a soft seal under the head of the plug. Only enough torque on a spanner to compress the teflon is required, they don't come out, and don't leak.
You'll never strip a plug thread, and you'll never need have new washers. Don't put it so far up the thread that some of it will end up inside the pan. If there is a recess under the plug's head, continue winding the teflon into the recess, only allow the flat tape to form itself into a round thread. Wind this on until the recess is full, and then some. You can dispense with the washer.
Next time you drain the oil, just pick off the teflon and rewind new stuff on.
Just be careful which direction you wind the tape on. It must go CLOCKWISE around the plug, looking at the threaded end of it. This is important, ask your plumber!
I think honda's specifications are different than most automakers.
If you put a new (oem) washer on your drain plug it only needs 29 ftpds.
That is only for honda though, every make is different.
However it only takes common sense how tight you need to go.
different car makers recommend different torques but this sounds about right just make sure that it is tight if you dont have a torque wrench and after changeing oil let the engine warm up and then check it for leaks
i never torque a oil drain plug. i just take a wrench and tighten it.
Sounds correct.
