on that same outboard there is oil dripping out of the lower unit but it doesnt smell like gear lube anybody know where it is coming from?I have a 1999 yamaha 9.9 4 stroke outboard i want to change crank case oil where is drain plug?
if im not mistaken, it should have a fill plug and a drain plug. should be located at the bottom of the leg. the fill plug should be located a lil higher then the drain plug. if ur planning on doing most the maintanace/repairs by yourself, u should invest in the repair/service manual. though when u bought the motor didnt it come with the motor manual? i have the same problem with the oil comming out, its probably motor oil. maybe one of the seals is broken or worn. u cant mistake gear oil with motor oil, just becuase of how bad gear oil smells. im thinking a worn seal in the lower unit. good luck with it.
