I tried to change the oil on my 2004 VW Golf. The oil drain plug is not the usual type. It appears to require some type of allen or hex socket. Does anyone know the what exact tool that is needed. I don't want to use the wrong thing and risk ';rounding'; it out. Thanks. Sal2004 VW Golf Oil Pan Drain Plug.?
If it has 6 flat sides it is an allen head. If it is ';star shaped'; it is a Torx. VW often uses a 17mm allen head for engine and transmission plugs.
I have a shop and have all those. To save buying a bunch of tools, call your VW dealer service department and ask them what size to use. They should tell you.2004 VW Golf Oil Pan Drain Plug.?
My niece also owns a 2004 VW Golf. Apparently, these vehicles are designed to not be owner maintained. She takes it to the dealer for maintenance. Also, the transmission fluid unit is sealed you can't even check the auto transmission fluid yourself. What's with that?
Try using the head of a bolt to get the size, then measure the head with a socket to get the size in mm. This will give you the hex socket you need.
If you use an adjustable wrench you will be fine.
