the car is still missfiring what elese can i tryI put 2 much engine oil in my car now its missfiring i have cleaned the spark plugs and drained the oil?
well if you know you have the oil level where its at it proper level then keep cleaning the plugs it will stop when the all oil burns off. it well run better then. make the wires are all in tit.

Oil overfill. Drained oil by removing the plug...?

But still getting a high level reading on dipstick. [good inch and a half above high mark]

What can be causing this? I'm on as level ground as I can. My truck hasn't moved since yesterday morning so i'm sure there's still oil in the sump.

Thanks for anyones help.Oil overfill. Drained oil by removing the plug...?
How much oil did you drain, are you sure you drained enough?Oil overfill. Drained oil by removing the plug...?
You must drain more oil.

Due to the dipstick tube the oil won't read above 1-2 inches above full.

Drain the oil until it is on the full mark.

What caused the over fill?

Did you add too much?

The average pickup holds only four to five quarts or litres.

If it starts getting fuller on it's own, without you adding any, you have dilution of the oil, and this means trouble.

This is a separate issue.
OK To Start With; Truck Type? Year %26amp; Mileage? Engine %26amp; Size?

Sounds like you need to Remove the Oil Pan and Scrap it Out, Pan Sounds like it's Full of Slug! You Have the Correct Dipstick Right? After you Clean Out the Oil Pan you need to Flush the Engine to Clean the Oil Gallies!

If the truck has been sitting for some time? Do a Complete Maintance Service!
It seems someone is sneeking oil into your vehicle. Possibly highly trained, midget-ninjas. ( I've had this problem myself a time or two. ) If I were you I would buy a ninja costume, and climb on the roof. Wait for them to show up and pull out a pair of nun-chucks. ( Or try windmilling on them, Bruce-Lee style, that works for me. )
inch and a half could be a quart and half over. how much did you put in?? have you started car then checked the oil level?????
The only safe fix is to drain out ALL the oil, then put back the amount the manufacturer tells you it should hold. If you don't know, I'd suggest starting at 4 quarts (or litres - it's near enough), then start checking between each extra quart you add. It'll probably be somewhere around 4 1/2 to 5 1/2 quarts in total.

Good luck!

Ok i drain the oil rite away should i change the plugs and clean the throttel body?

here is a general check list. OIL every 2000-3000 Spark plugs and wires(cap and rotor if it has them) every 30000 throttle body cleaning every 50000, transmission auto every 50000 manual every 30000, Grease if applicable all front end components and on some vehicles rear end components every 3000-5000Ok i drain the oil rite away should i change the plugs and clean the throttel body?
Sounds like a good planOk i drain the oil rite away should i change the plugs and clean the throttel body?
Yes
That would be a good idea
Rule of thumb plugs are good for 20,000 miles, unless there is engine problems, for instance,if you have a bad cylinder,as far as the throttle body goes yeah might as well especilay if you live in a dusty place, you know dirt roads and what not.I recomend going with a high performance plugs, and wires i buy all my stuff here, for my Vette and my 67 Olds

  • The drain plug fell out of my car 2 months after the oil change and blew the engine. Now what?

I called Mazda because the car is only 7 months old. They said since Jiffy lube changed the oil last they were responsible. I contacted Jiffy lube and they told me they did not feel responsible due to the fact that this usually happens in the first 500 miles. I had 4000 miles on my car but it was only 2 months after the oil change. We are barely making ends meet now and we have a baby... how am I going to afford a lawyer? The reason I bought a new car was so I didn't have to worry about any of this. Please help!! I don't know what to do next..The drain plug fell out of my car 2 months after the oil change and blew the engine. Now what?
I can't believe you didn't see an oil leak under the car in 2 months! Don't you ever check the oil, LIKE IT TELLS YOU IN THE OWNERS MANUAL?? Good luck in court cause they';re gonna ask the same questions. The drain plug fell out of my car 2 months after the oil change and blew the engine. Now what?
only thing to do is take jiffy lube to court lawyers usually take a percentage of the winnings. thats why you go to a dealership to get oil changed and not jiffy lube. you want 18 yr old kids with no experience working on your new car, or factory trained techs that are trained specifically for your vehcile, and if that happened they would just warranty engine and have mazda pay for it
In two months time you should have seen some oil on the ground where you park. Did you ever check your oil in 4000 miles? Did the warning light come on? Did you stop driving it? It sucks that it happened, but I don't think you are going to win.

Jiffy will say that they recommend you change your oil every 3 months or 3,000 miles. WHICHEVER OCCURS FIRST.

You may check and see if Mazda has a issue with oil plugs on your model.
Two months later it wasn't Jiffy Lube's fault. If the drain plug came out from being loose and you never noticed any oil leaks, you are the one that neglected your car.

Sounds like you need a major engine rebuild or a replacement. You know that red idiot light on the dash that says OIL or Check Engine? That's a clue you don't have any motor oil in it. That means STOP DRIVING NOW DUMMY!!!

Of course any lawyer will take the case to court just to take your money. He gets paid either way if he wins or loses.

I'm sure Jiffy Lube lawyers would have a field day in court with you, then counter sue for attorney fees and court costs.
I'm going to ask a stupid question....

How many watts is your stereo amp?

And how high do you turn up your sound that you are distracted and don't hear the engine making unusual noise, the ';check engine'; light lit or other dashboard indications of impending doom.

You the driver are responsible for your oil level. If you drive a car, You the driver are responsible to ensure that water is in the radiator, gas is in the tank, oil is in the engine, trans fluid is in the transmission, windshield washer fluid is in the appropriate place, as well as the brake fluid and power steering fluid and all that. There isn't a single one of those fluids that is magically someone elses problem, they are all your responsiblity as the driver to check as often as necessary to ensure you have a safe driveable vehicle.

Anyway, try suing the gas station the next time you run out of gas. Actually please don't, just take responsibility for what is your problem.

How much damage to the engine do you have really? If you ignored the funny noises and drove it until it seized and cracked the block or something? What a good driver should do is stop and inspect the engine if it is making funny noises, and I'm pretty sure an engine without oil is making some recognizable indication before it full on is blown. But whatever that is, it is likely to be cheaper to buy a new motor than to hire a lawyer. A new motor is only a few thousand eh?

If I'm trying to ';drain all the liquids'; out of an engine, is it as simple as taking off the oil pan plug?

Oil in filter. Water in block. Power steering fluid and freon ( not really in engine). If I'm trying to ';drain all the liquids'; out of an engine, is it as simple as taking off the oil pan plug?
For the oil, I would remove the drain plug and oil filter. Once drained I would put the plug and filter back on to keep dirt out.

You also have the coolant in the engine. There will typically be a drain at the bottom of the radiator. This will get most of the coolant out. There is usually one or more plugs on the engine that will allow additional coolant to be drained. On a V8, there will typically be two drain plugs, one on each side. On an I4, there will usually be only one drain plug on the engine.

The drain plugs on the engine are typically located low, several inches above the oil pan.If I'm trying to ';drain all the liquids'; out of an engine, is it as simple as taking off the oil pan plug?
No, all that will do is remove the oil. You will still have coolant in the cooling system, transmission fluid in the transmission, power steering fluid in the power steering, and brake fluid in the brake lines. That of course is the entire vehicle. If you are just looking at the engine alone, oil and coolant.
If by ';All the Liquids'; you are only referring to oil. If you want coolant you will have to open the radiator drain or remove the lower radiator hose.
sounds like you are going to scrap a vehicle. that includes the fuel tank, oil, filter, power steering, brake fluid, coolant, and any other fluids you can think of.

82 honda atc: 2 drain plugs. one is for oil but what is the other one for?

also how do you fill the second one?82 honda atc: 2 drain plugs. one is for oil but what is the other one for?
Not knowing what '82 Honda ATC you have,,I can only guess.

If it happened to be a 110cc or a 70cc,,,

I'd guess that it wasn't a drain plug at all,,,

but rather a Plug for the Cam Chain tensioner which LOOKS a lot like a Drain Plug.

On those particular engines the thing is positioned on far left of crankcase,,just behind crankshaft centerline.

And it screws in at an angle.82 honda atc: 2 drain plugs. one is for oil but what is the other one for?
chances are the second drain plug is also for oil, the inside of the case is baffled, you pull both plugs to drain all the oil and only fill the crank case with the filler hole, there isn't a special filler, hope this helps :)
it could be for gearbox oil or your water for your radiator
I already answered this question. Why are you asking it again?

The only place on that machine to add fluid, is the dipstick hole - 4 stroke motor oil.

No other type of fluid is needed on that machine and there is no place to add any!

(unless you consider air a fluid - that goes in the tires LOL)

The round plug with the slot in it, that is pointing forward, is just an inspection hole.

Don't put anything in that hole - it should be completely dry.

Is a sump plug the 1 u take out under the engine to drain the oil?

As everyone else says, Yes it is.

I would advise running the engine for a minute or two before draining the oil as it warms it up and will drain easier.

Is a sump plug the 1 u take out under the engine to drain the oil?
    Hi

Yes it is, it's in what looks like a tin bowl, don't take the plug out until you've got a new copper washer for the plug and what ever you do don't over tighten it.

Ray. West York's. U.K.Is a sump plug the 1 u take out under the engine to drain the oil?
Yep thats correct. just remember if you do it yourself, your probably get oil over ya and its worth putting a new sump plug in once drained, there so cheap and your know your get a good seal when tighting it back up.
yes the term oil sump plug and oil pan plug are usually describing the same thing in the automotive industry
yes, a messy job! sometimes called a sump bung as well. if you r doing an oil change, dont forget to fo the filter as well otherwise it would be a waste of time
Yes, just make sure it is under the engine. This is the ';BOLT'; to drain the oil from the engine.

    'BRILLIANT'!!!!
yep it is as the first person said make sure you put it back on or your oil will run straight out again
Yup, just be careful to put it back on before pour new oil into the engine......thats happened before :-(
yep! the 1 under the oil pan is what you take out.
    That is correct

Engine damage? Whatever the concerns, your dealer should be more than happy to make things right again.

    http://forums.speedguide.net/showthread.鈥?/a>

    My own personal experience?

Years ago, another yard worker and I got bored while working in a salvage yard after school and decided to see for ourselves how long an engine would run without any oil. We physically punched a large hole in the oil pan, hammered the filter clean off the block and cut the fan belts off the old Mercury and jumped started the engine. It run along fine for a minute or so (despite the lifters clattering away - very loudly) - we then bumped up the engine rpm's by jamming a piece of molding between the seat and the throttle - it ran for almost four minutes before it made several ungodly noises and literally screeched to an abrupt stop - crackling like pop corn and smoking like a mosquito machine for several minutes afterwards.

It seemed like that engine hammered away for hours before it bit the dust - but a little under 4 minutes, under the worst possible conditions, was the ';official'; tally.

No one would have driven this engine for more than 30 seconds or so with the extremely loud clattering noises that the lifters were making from the initial start up.

I fully understand your concern with your car - it's a new vehicle and now you are fully justified in your concern about the engine.

A similar occurrence happened at a dealership located close by, and the dealer towed the vehicle in (almost two miles away) and replaced the badly leaking filter, refilled the engine and there didn't seem to be any concern.

The owner, however, was adamant that he should have a new engine - after a short meeting with the owner, the dealer gave the customer a written warranty for 100,000 miles on the engine as assurance and several years later the same owner traded the vehicle in at the same dealership - he never experienced any engine concerns.
Got the paperwork from when the dealer touched it? That's going to be real important. Also, I hope you were able to stop right away, before the engine was ruined! Anyway, first dealer, then factory rep., then the car company, then court and the media, in that order. Good Luck!

bad oil change boy! go sit down now and look at what you have done! BAD !
    good question.

Had oil changed by dealer, they left drain plug loose and I lost all oil?

I usually do it myself, but I took my truck to the dealer for $35.00 oil change.Next morning there's a giant oil spill under my truck and the drain plug is so loose it spun off with one turn.It ruined my driveway and I now I have no way to work unless I walk 5 miles to the auto parts store and get 5 quarts of oil...walk back and replenish the oil so I can drive to work. What do you think the dealer will do to make up for shoddy service?Had oil changed by dealer, they left drain plug loose and I lost all oil?
Don't touch the truck. Call the dealer and explain the problem. Have the dealer pay for a tow truck to come a get the truck. Put the drain plug back like it was. Good luck.Had oil changed by dealer, they left drain plug loose and I lost all oil?
    Bug?

if you tell the Dealer that you accidentally caused the drain plug too come completely, out and ruin the drive and whatever else,, he's going too seize the opportunity too say that: How do we know that you weren't trying too sabotage our work, too try and get us to have to buy you a new engine?

Whenever anyone of you are in this predicament you do not touch the vehicle! You get a camera(still or video and you record any and all

    possibilities.
I don't know what they will do, but when I worked in a garage the owner would have had me out there filling the oil and cleaning the driveway
Honstley, I think your gonna be hard pressed to get anything out of them. However, if you do want them to be lyiable for the dammage, don't touch the car. Leave it where it sits. If you drive it anymore, they'll just say that you caused harm to the motor without calling them first and you won't get a dime. Also, don't try to take it to another shop. If you add more oil to it and let another shop check it out, they'll blame you for not bringing it to them first. I would give them a call right when they open and demand that someone come down and check out the problem. Good Luck

  • What size oil drain plug crush gasket does a ford F-150 (4.6L triton V8) takes?

It doesn't. The factory drain plug has a rubber o-ring attached that seals, when the drain plug is tightened to the proper torque. Installing another gasket over it may cause an oil leak. If the plug threads are stripped, it will need to be replaced. You can purchase it at any Ford dealer parts department by asking for part number F75Z-6730-BA, or by clicking on the link below:

HOPE THIS HELPSWhat size oil drain plug crush gasket does a ford F-150 (4.6L triton V8) takes?
The drain plug size is a 14x1.50, could be a 12x1.75 very few fords use those though, most gm's use that size but I have seen a few fords with them.

Would an oil-change place stock drain plugs?

I rounded the drain plug/bolt while trying to change my own oil (don't laugh...) If I took it to a place that does oil changes, would they have drain plugs in stock to replace it, or should I have the part in hand to give to them? I'm looking to get the drain plug fixed, let them change the oil, and be done with it.Would an oil-change place stock drain plugs?
Any good oil change place should have at least the popular ones on hand...wouldn't hurt to have the correct one with youWould an oil-change place stock drain plugs?
If you have taken out the plug and drained the oil,do not take it anywhere by driving without the oil.

Get it towed or bring oil and pour it by first fixing the plug tight. Then pour oil over the top cap provided after opening it.
Ya I have a box full of them just for this reason. you can get them at any auto parts sotre or Geez Wal Mart too..
They might, but a parts store would for sure, and likely cheaper. Get one, then take it with you to the oil change shop.
Go to any decent auto parts store. This happens a lot, and they'll stock them for probably just a few dollars. Throw it in the cupholder until you go in for another oil change.
Call ahead. 9 out of 10 times YES. They cant afford not to.
Most oil change places have extra drain plugs. The ones they forgot to replace on cars they serviced. Actually you can get one from a parts house or dealership, or wrecking yard. They are cheap.
I would think you should go to the nearest PepBoys, AutoLand, or NAPA Parts place and buy your own plug (and the correct size wrench with which to remove and reinstall it next time). Then you could bring the vehicle to Jiffy Lube or whatever service center with which you're comfortable. Hand them the plug and pay their labor rate.
No, NAPA, Car Quest and the manufacturer of your car's parts room would have one. While your at it buy a box end wrench that fits the new plug perfectly.
yes they should have a new plug but you would be better off taking the old one to your nearest parts dealer an get a replacment A good parts store (NAPA) should be able to look up the right plug. Call first that way you dont have to drain oilean than find a way to the parts store
go to napaoe autozone, oreillys, etc and buy one before you get oil changed then when the oil is changed they usaully do it for free. just tell them their competitor said it needed to be changed on next oil change. because unless its a focus, neon, cobalt etc they usually dont stock drain plugs. they usually only have an universal plug or one of those that twist in and have a compression type feature which I think is hoakie.
I did the same thing a few years ago went to the junk yard and took one of a wreck NO CHARGE

When do i change the differential oil on a 2005 corolla with 60k on it and where is the drain plug located.?

well, you don't have to change the fluid. I work in a transmission shop and I rebuild differentials and transmissions. honestly you can pretty much have a car go it's lifetime without changing the differential fluid. trust me. but if you really want to do it. you're car is a front wheel drive so you have to pop the hood and find the transmission, on the rigtht side of the engine and there should be a hex or square plug, you can use a crecent wrench

How much oil does a 1981 chevy caprice 4.4L v8 267CI take, and where is the drain plug located?

5 quarts of oil should do it maybe 5.5 and the drain plug should be under the front of the car to the right of the crankshaft.

How do i change the oil on my 1985 honda rebel? Where are the drain plug, screen and fill?

-The oil drain bolt is on the L ';side'; of the motor near the front %26amp; bottem. (you need a 17mm wrench).

-It doesn't have a conventional oil filter. It's a centrifical filter and oil screen that just have to be cleaned. No need to clean it at every oil change. Clean it when you have to do motor work like change the clutch. They're in the R crankcase.

-The oil fill cap/dip stick is on the R crankcase cover.

-Remove the drain bolt and drain the oil.

-Re-install the bolt. Change the crush washer if needed.

-Hold the bike upright (as if you were sitting on it). Add oil to the top line of the dip stick. Use motorcycle oil. Car oil can't handle the deposits left behind by the clutch friction plates. If you use car oil you'll just have to change it twice as often.

-Re-install the cap and start the bike. Let it run for a couple of minutes (to let the oil circulate through the motor).

-Turn off the bike and let it cool down for a few minutes (to let the oil from the top of the motor drain down to the crankcase).

-Hold the bike upright and add oil to the top line of the dipstick if it's low.How do i change the oil on my 1985 honda rebel? Where are the drain plug, screen and fill?

Make sure to have all your vehicle records available. Be prepared that they want their garage to do the work with a motor that has the same amount of miles as your car. Don't let them get a motor that has more! Report Abuse

Read your invoice-in fine print it might say that you have to bring it to them first before you can seek outside garage opinions %26amp; if you do you waive their responsibility. Report Abuse

And lastly, if they are a franchise, contact the corporate headquarters. They should have a district manager or franchise department that would oversee that shop and they can get things rolling smoother too. Report Abuse

    nope
Not me, I don't know where Monroe is but that happended to me once after I went to jiffy lube! I ended up paying $2,500 to have the engine rebuilt. Later I heard that I may have been able to get Jiffy Lube to pay for it, they may even have insurance that covers it, but it has to be done fairly soon after the incident. Let me know if I can be of further help!

That might be one of the ones that doesn't have one. They use a suction hose and suck it right out the dip stick pipe.

Talk to the manager. If that doesn't work, call someone at corporate. I've had a bad experience with Wal-Mart's automotive department. When I spoke with a higher up (it's been awhile and I don't remember exactly who), he offered to pay for everything. I just needed to send him the bill.Wal-Mart services technican messed up my oil pan when changing my oil... he turned the drain plug the wrong?
Bring the estimate to the manager. They will most likely pay for the repairs. Doesn't matter how long the person has been working there. You may have to wait untill all the paper work is done to get your money but I would believe it will happen
Wallmart should pay for it. Make arangments with the manager to have them pay the bill for your mechanic.

way with a wrench, and he completely stripped the thread inside the oil pan so that the screw is now very loose, they are saying that it was the wrong plug but now it completely loose and I saw him struggling with the wrench, turning it the wrong way until he realized he was damaging the thread inside of the oil pan, they filed a claim and i called acura and they gave me an estimate of 700 dollars to fix. do you think that the insurance company for wal-mart will pay for damage that I know! he caused, his manger informed me that the technican was working there 2-3 months only and he's made ';a lot of mistakes'; i am not awaiting a call from the insurance adjustor... any tips? comments? what i should do? thank you! the car is a 1997 acura 3.0cl 6cyclinderWal-Mart services technican messed up my oil pan when changing my oil... he turned the drain plug the wrong?
I'd demand they fix it or pay to have it fixed and if they refuse tell the manager he will be hearing from your lawyer. That might scare

them into fixing it. I would definitely get the name of the dude that changed the oil because they will probably fire him to get rid of the evidence and if you have taken the car there several times before for oil changes there is more evidence for you that they did it as it wasn't leaking before.Wal-Mart services technican messed up my oil pan when changing my oil... he turned the drain plug the wrong?
The manager provided an admission on guilt by saying the technician has made alot of mistakes. If I were you I'd talk to the store manager about the situation. Because if the tech has made alot of mistakes then he shouldn't be working in that department, and walmart should pay for the damages caused by their technician. Good luck!
This is totally way off track. The service sucks. They should have apologized and no questions asked, should have inserted an oversized plug on the spot. You won't be too happy if that loose plug falls out on a trip.Get it fixed now. If you were here I would fix it and take my bill of 30 bucks right to them. They must pay, they are to be responsible.
    $700?

If they refuse then just plug up the hole and retap it for $20 or so.

Dont do anything until you hear from them--insurance companies can be pretty random about what theyll cover-depends on mood of the adjuster and if they think youll sue and such.
    They Already that that person made ';A Lot of Mistakes';!! Was it Leaking Oil before you came in? Get the Number and/or E-mail for Wal-Mart's Corp. Office and File a Complaint! $700 is a New Oil Pan? ';So the Car is Older, It was Good Before you came in There and They..............Your Car!';
they messed it up, they are responsible to fix it.

if they have told you that they will not fix it, then

I suggest getting it fixed by the dealer, then taking them to small claims court if they do not pay you.
This is not really a big a problem to fix. The Wal-Mart people can have the oil pan replaced. This is what I would choose if somebody else is paying for it.

If I had to pay for it, I would just re-tap the drain hole and get larger plugs. Auto part stores sell kits for these. This happens more often then you realize. It is fairly cheap (some where below $50).

$700 is just rediculouse. Since your car is 1997, you should be able to find used oil pan (used oil pans are just as good as new pan - unless the plugs are also stripped).

    Good Luck.
Sounds like Wal-Mart has admitted fault and is taking action to repair it.

The biggest mistake is that you took your car to Walmart to have a highschool drop-out making $7.50/hour change your engine oil just so you could save a couple bucks.

Drain Plug Bolt in Car Oil Pan Stuck!?

How do i get it out, i was working on it for a couple hours and it doesnt want to budge, ive used wrenches and pliers and no luck, just seems to chew the bolt to a round shape....is there a technique used to remove a bolt like this or a certain tool to take stripped bolts out?

There is a tool you can get at most auto parts stores. Irwin is one of the brands. It has small ';fins'; on the inside and you use a hammer to tap on and the ';fins'; gouge into the metal of the head so you can use a ratchet to get it out.Drain Plug Bolt in Car Oil Pan Stuck!?
Cory, If you live near a Sears store they have several special sockets both metric and SAE sizes called Damaged Nut and Bolt Sockets. Inside the socket there are left hand spiral flutes that bite and tighten on the stuck bolt as you turn the socket counter-clockwise. I guaranty one of these sockets will do the job for you. It would help if you knew the head size of the Pan bolt before it was damaged. Most newer stuff is all metric. Somewhere around 14-15-16 mm in size.
This was a known problem for the older grand-ams. Our method was to heat the plug up and it came right out. Of course replace the plug.Use common since heating around that area and dont overheat--Maybe try the other methods first.
make sure your turning it left..not meant to insult you but it happens..but if you are which you probably are..your probably gonna have to drill it out if the head is rounded off
are you turning it the right way? take some vise grips or a pair or small pipe wrench.

Part of my drain plug broke off in oil pan?!?

The person who owned my 1988 Jeep before me used an expandable drain plug, and when I tried removing it part of it broke off inside the oil pan. Pull the pan my friend. Do not risk it!!!! The strong magnet answer will work, but it's not worth the risk. Part of my drain plug broke off in oil pan?!?
There is a screen at the bottom of the oil pump. I would still remove the oil pan if that's something you are able to do. It's never a good thing to have foreign material in your oil pan.

If you can't remove the oil pan then take a strong magnet and attach it to the pan to hold the lose piece in one spot.. it well also help hold some of the metal shavings that you get with motor ware.

How do find the drain plug on an ml320 to change the oil?

It's located on the oil pan on the bottom of the engine. It is a 13mm drain plug. Use a 13mm wrench. How do find the drain plug on an ml320 to change the oil?
Altho' not familiar with the ML's, most MB's are designed to have the oil sucked out via the dipstick tube. The Dealer uses a vacuum system for that purpose. Us DIY-ers use what is called a Topsider. It's a vacuum system used by boaters since most can't get to the bottom of their engines. How do find the drain plug on an ml320 to change the oil?
Check the oil pan, that is were the oil is store, the drain plug should be somewhere around it.

Where is the oil pan on a 1998 5.0 V8 Explorer, and where on the pan is the drain plug??

This is my first time changing my oil, so I need some help. I looked under the truck and I think I found the pan, but I'm not sure if I'm right. How far back is it from the engine? Is the drain plug on the front of the pan (towards the engine), on the back (towards the back of the car), or on either side of the pan (driver's or passenger's side)? The owner's guide does not explain the oil changing process very well and does not point out where the pan or drain plug is. Any detail or additional oil changing advice would help. Thanks!!Where is the oil pan on a 1998 5.0 V8 Explorer, and where on the pan is the drain plug??
Your oil pan is right under the engine and the drain plug is right there. do not over tighten the drain plug and its suggested that you replace the drain plug gasket ( just suggested ). The drain plug is going to be on the lowest point of the oil pan. Change the oil warm, change the filter, only tighten the filter about 3/4 of a turn after it touches the block and make sure the old gasket comes off with the old filter. 24$ doesnt sound so bad at Jiffy Lube does it ........LOLWhere is the oil pan on a 1998 5.0 V8 Explorer, and where on the pan is the drain plug??
directly under motor with drain plug in back pan is aluminum square looking
the oil pan is right under the motor just like all cars the plug is on the oil pan just look closer you'll see it
It's an inexpensive process. $14 to $30 depending on where you go.If you can see what the tech is doing when you take it to the shop, you'll get an idea.

If it's not leaking you'll be ok,next oil change though go to your local auto parts store and pay a couple dollars and replace it.Unless you have a clean container then go today drain it replace the plug and put it back in ,it must be DIRT FREE,the container that is cause when you buy your new plug it'll have the gasket on the oil plug.Oil change missing gasket around drain plug.......is this a big deal?
it is better to have a look at that regularly and other wise seal it with silicon for time sake....
if something is meant to be between two things put it there :P It may not leak at this moment but it may as time goes by..just like wen you skip a washer or something on a kids toy you put together at home and it constantly gets loose :P
You need to put it on. Gasket is the word. It is called that because it stops leaks. It will leak and cost you money. In oil and if your not checking it, it will cost you a need motor. Most put it on. Very important.
Just keep an eye on it. You should be ok.

Oil leaking from around drain plug- 2001 jetta?

Take it back to them with your bill. Let them tighten it up or replace the washer on the drain plug before they tighten it. Complain on a sloppy job.Oil leaking from around drain plug- 2001 jetta?
Not put back on right! SOMEONE didnt clean up around the pplug area, so you got all that gunk and crap settling at the bottom by the drain, and just interfered with the tight fit...

Or not tight enough, the person who did this was obviously a retard and should never be allowed to work on a car again!
VW's have a aluminium oil pan. most quick lube places tend to over torque (tighten) drain plugs and strip the threads. thats the worst case scenario. if you're lucky it was just left loose.

the oil filter housing is accually an oil cooler. and coolant runs through it to cool the oil. its posible that the seal is leaking and thats why you see the oil or they just did a messy job of changing your filter. and didnt clean it up afterwards. hope this helps you out some, good luck.
The next time you have the oil changed have them replace the washer and torque the plug properly. The oil filter can be tightened slightly.
it could be residule oil left that wasnt cleaned up properly if not the drain plug could have been over tightend or the crush washer not replaced with a new one like it should have been
Try tightening the plug on the oil pan. If that doesnt work, get a washer to fit on the plug bolt. Costs about a quarter.

Oil on the oil filter housing may be from the oil change. If its fresh, then the filter needs to be tightented by hand.

    Dont go back to firestone.

  • How much does it cost to fix oil pan and drain plug?

I got a 1996 Toyota camry. I went to another place for an oil change and they found oil pan threads is pulled and drain plug threads is stripped. They suggested me to bring my car to a repair shop as soon as possible and also they said whoever did the oil change last time is the one responible for those damaged. However, I already moved to another town and it seems little impossible to ask for warranty because I can't bring it to the last shop to fix it. So I decide to bring my car to another repair shop to fix the problem.

How much does it usually cost to re-thread/replace the oil pan and how much to replace a new drain plug? How much does it cost to fix oil pan and drain plug?
    ~$20

    1.) Go to junk yard

2.) get non-screwed up oil pan

2.) take off old oil pan

3.) put on new oil pan

    4.) Oil pan fixed

How much does it cost to fix oil pan and drain plug?
Find out size of drain hole and buy a retreading kit. I also would buy a plug that has a lever on the end so when u screw it in there u push lever down it has a rubber seal in it. When u push the lever it spreads the rubber out to fit more snugly. I can remember what those plugs are called though. I used that kit and it worked.
If the pan and plug threads were stripped already, was the car leaking oil there? It seems more likely they were fine and the place you took your car to this time, not last time, is to blame for the stripped threads.

Do all oil pan drain plugs take the same size wrench? If so, what? If not, are there many possibilities?

No not at all. If you have a 1/2, 9/16 and 5/8, standard size box end wrenches along with 14mm, 15,mm and 16mm you'll have most of them covered.

Large HD trucks, tractors and heavy equipment is another story.

You'd better plan on continuing your set on up to 1'; and metric sizes on up to 25mm.Do all oil pan drain plugs take the same size wrench? If so, what? If not, are there many possibilities?
Probably a dozen possibilities, metric and SAE. 15mm may be the most common I have seen lately.Do all oil pan drain plugs take the same size wrench? If so, what? If not, are there many possibilities?
for cars there are 6 common sizes 3 standard 3 metric so 6 wrenches or sockets should cover most models
Every engine has a different size drain plug. They usually range from 13mm to 17 mm.

NO they are all different. My Civic and Audi are 17mm and 19mm (I forget which is which).

What should I do about Jiffy Lube purposely tightening my drain plug and oil filter too tight?

My husband took his truck to Jiffy Lube a couple months back for a quick oil change- I didn't have time to do it myself.

Today I made an attempt to change the oil as it was a little overdue. The filter on his truck is in a very odd spot where even a filter wrench is impossible to use (unless you remove shrouds and other things.) I've never had problems changing his oil before simply because I line the filter with oil and hand-tighten it... like you're supposed to.

Luckily, I made friends with an employee at a local shop. Jiffy Lube cranked the drain plug so tight, stripping the threads was almost inevitable. They crushed the filter getting IT off. Everything turned out to be okay though.

I read online that places like Jiffy Lube (not all) will do this on purpose so that you'll have to go back because it's nearly impossible to do the oil change yourself.

Is there anything I can do besides write bad reviews online? My oil change is already done so there's no proving it was ever as bad as it really was.

Thanks in advance! What should I do about Jiffy Lube purposely tightening my drain plug and oil filter too tight?
Tightening the plug enough to strip the threads is wrong, if they stripped the threads they should pay to repair it.

Crushing the old filter to remove it is not unusual, an old mechanics trick to remove a stubborn filter is to drive a screwdriver through it and twist it off. It's being thrown away anyway so it doesn't matter if the old filter is damaged.

It isn't common to overtighten a filter since too much torque will crush the filter .

You are not supposed to only hand tighten a filter, you are supposed to hand tighten it and then tighten it about a quarter turn with a filter wrench.

If you only hand tighten it, there is a risk that it will come loose while driving. At best you get a big leak and a dirty engine, at worst you get an engine fire.

I don't think they were trying to screw you, they may just be incompetentWhat should I do about Jiffy Lube purposely tightening my drain plug and oil filter too tight?
If a person tightened it, it can be untightened. You may not be strong enough to do it yourself, but it physically can be done. So there's really no way to ';purposely'; do this to make you come back. The most they can do it use a hydraulic ratchet to tighten it (which is more about doing the job quickly than it is about making you come back), but that just means you could loosen it using one too.
Don't go to places like that anymore. They've done way too much damage to my vehicles over the years. The people who work there are the ones McDonald's rejected. I spend the extra dollars to have a real mechanic change my oil when I don't have the time to do it myself. But finding a good and honest mechanic these days can be difficult.
i m sure they used an air gun to tighten it which is really hard for a person to loosen it by him self.

i say just bring a strong pipe and then put it at the end of the oil changing tool (at the hand of the tool) and then try to loosen it!

i had the same problem and then i did what i told you and then it worked!!!!!!!!!!!!
Good luck proving it....that is what they are going to say...unless you have video or photographic evidence of them purposly doing that then I think the court system is going to to rule in your favor...

I wouldnt put it by them however, that they did something like that though....good luck with this! :)
yea don't go there again. tires plus does the same thing. if you buy a tire and have it put on they will always tell you something else is wrong with the car. most of the time they fix it even without you asking them. you were lucky they were able to get it off without breaking anything. hopefully it was the threads on the plug that got stripped and not the oil pan itself. my hats off to you for being able to change your oil yourself. you are my kind of girl.

The VR6 uses an element/housing type oil filter, much like modern BMWs. It is located between the engine and radiator attached to the engine block. The oil drain plug is located on the bottom of the oil pan towards the rear.

My oil pan's drain plug is stripped?

my '97 saturn sc2's drain plug is stripped; if i managed to get it out somehow (via pulling or vice grips?), it wouldn't go back in, would it?My oil pan's drain plug is stripped?
They make sockets for removing rounded off bolts. Mine are craftsman from searsMy oil pan's drain plug is stripped?
You might try carefully turning it with a pipe wrench. These wrenches are designed to turn round items. Before you try anything , you probably want to purchase a new plug, to replace the damaged one, afterward. Also make sure you use the correct wrench size when installing the new one, so it doesn't become stripped also.
If you can get it out, and the plug threads are damaged, you should be okay. Take it to a parts store and get a new one. Some of the bigger stores carry replacements. If the treads of the pan are stripped, the you're toast. You will need to either have new threads cut in the pan, if you can find a tap the size to do it, or you will have to replace the pan.

    Good luck.
If you go to a good auto parts store they can fix you up with a self tapping oversized drain plug to replace the stripped out plug. You will eventually have to remove the old plug to change your oil and that is when to put the new one in.
are you saying the head on the drain plug is stripped or the threads themself, dont pull it out unless you have a replacement plug it might not go back in
try using vise grips or a small pipe wrench. once you get it out, get a self tapping bolt for it. it will make its own threads.
if you dont want to tap and put a larger plug..use a rubber repair plug...get it at any pts store...advancemzone,oreilly.....i use one on my tractor,,,still working after 10 years
Why would you want to put it back in? A new one costs about $2.00 and you can get it back out again.

Changing motor oil without removing drain plug?

drain plug treads are striped was put back in too tightChanging motor oil without removing drain plug?
If you can get it out, you can purchase self-tapping drain plugs to replace the old one -- if that is, in fact, the problem. If it is just that the head is rounded, you just buy a replacement plug, not a self-tapping plug. You can also get plugs with a through-the-plug drain, but I've never felt comfortable with one of those, so I can't comment on how effective or preferable they are.

It is possible to get oil-change-pumps that draw the oil out through the dipstick pipe, but don't expect to get thorough drains from those. But good in a pinch, at least you can get your oil changed if nothing else...Changing motor oil without removing drain plug?
If it's stripped, it is possible it will leak, and/or fall out. If that happens while going down the road at 70, the chances of blowing up the engine before you notice the red idiot light telling you the oil pressure has dropped are high.

So go see your mechanic, and have the stripped one removed, then have a self tapping over sized one put in. Problem solved.

But yes, it is possible to change motor oil without removing the drain plug. You can get a pump with a hose that goes into the dip stick hole and removes the old oil that way. Or, (not recommended), remove the filter, place a catch pan under the filter and run the engine just long enough to dump all the oil out.
Well if the drain plug threads are stripped then it would probly be leaking oil..... Im not sure what kind of vehical it is but if you can take the oil pan off you can drain the oil that way. you can also get a new pan with a new plug already in it.
you need to get that drain plug out. the only way else to do it is drop the oil pan and i don,t think you want to do that. see if you can get the tip of a screwdriver under the plug and take a wrench and turn the plug slowly. it might catch some thread.
You can get a kit (for old ladies) that will take the oil out of the dipstick hole and put into a can. The problem is that it leaves all the sludge in the bottom of the sump.
Take to a shop. Most of the time you can put a self tapping over sized one in. If not they will have to replace the oil pan.
    They can suck the old oil out through the dipstick tube. this may be better in your case since the drain plug threads are stripped. I've seen all my life mechanics who don't know when to stop tightning a bolt or nut%26lt;
I would change your oil pan. Don't pump your oil out by pulling off the filter and running your motor, that would be a good way to ruin your engine.
take the drain plug out and go to the parts store and get the next size larger drain plug that self taps and all will be fine.
vice grips and or maybe pry on it some really just go back to place of last oil change or to any shop let them do it they see it all the time they know how to handle it
well, at least you can change the filter til you figure out a solution

How do you change the gear oil in a 2003 mercruiser alpha 1 lower unit, can not find the drain plug?

Go to your marine supply dealer and you will need 2qts of merc hi performance lower unit oil and also purchase the pump for it as it has fitting to screw into lower screw hole that makes it less messy. Always fill from bottom screw hole to top so that as it fills it purges the air up and out.Once it starts to come out top hole put top screw in then remove pump and put bottom screw in . Then get in boat and top off oil in resevoir . i was riding my VIP scooter and hit a big bump and the drain plug on the bottom was draining oil what kind of oil does it take and how do i fix the drainingScooter hit concrete on bottom and oil is running out the drain plug?
probably uses 10W30 oil. as for the leaking oil. check your engine carefully as you may have cracked your case or your plug just may be loose. If the drain plug is damaged but not the threads, get a new plug. Not sure but if the motor has a separate oil pan and the threads to the drain hole are damaged, you need a new oil pan. Other wise you might be looking at a new engine unless you can have someone tig weld your case but that sometimes doesn't turn out well. If its the worst case scenario you can try pig putty to fix a cracked case but it wont last forever even if you do it and it looks good. Good luck.Scooter hit concrete on bottom and oil is running out the drain plug?
read your manual...and get a new drain plug (if it will fit, now that you've damaged it...)

The battery is always located under the right plastic tray in the trunk.

The oil drain plug cover is a rectangular shaped plastic cover about 3 inches wide secured by one single screw.

    - BMW dealers will only offer free oil change every 15000 miles. I'd do one in-between on my own anyway because I feel 15000 is pushing it a little too far.
There are three 8mm screws holding a triangular shaped cover in place on the splash shield under the engine. scouts honor. and yes, the battery is behind the right side cover which is held in place by two plastic 90 degree turn plugs.

  • My father had a friend of his change his oil yesterday. Didnt tighten drain plug and it blew up.?

My father had asked them if every thing was tight before the man dropped it back down off the jack and he said it was. Later on in the day, my father was driving home from a restaurant and the engine seized.I am wondering if that person is legally entitled to either have my fathers car fixed or buy him a new car.My father had a friend of his change his oil yesterday. Didnt tighten drain plug and it blew up.?
Your father's friend is not liable as he is not a trader. My father had a friend of his change his oil yesterday. Didnt tighten drain plug and it blew up.?
If he had put the drain plug in, even hand tightened it, it wouldn't have emptied out that fast. Maybe he didn't replace all of the oil. I have always changed my own oil,(until I just got a new Explorer, and I haven't done it yet) I pay more attention to my car, and my husbands truck than he does. I'm right there beside him when it needs work done, and I know as much as he does about most cars. So we're not all Dummy's that ';blow engines.'; I have beautiful hands and manicured nails also, so I'm no grease monkey.

ANYWAY...If his friend is any kind of friend, he'll do whats right and

fix it. He could sue him, but he's lost a friend. Will he still be a friend if he does nothing?
Your father is legally entitled to shut his car off instead of driving it with no oil pressure. Is he some kind of nut?

It's not easy to seize up an engine. Women do it all the time, I know, but they figure somebody else has to fix it.
The man's responsibility lies in whether your father paid him for the services, or whether your father went the cheap route to have his oil changed for free.

Reminds me of an old adage...

    ';You get what you pay for. ';

Reliable garage mechanics are worth their weight in gold.
Your farther should have seen that the oil warning light was on when he was driving the car.

Your farther can ask is friend if he is willing to pay for the damage ,but it could spoil a good friendship .
the man who changed the oil is liable for the engine. i think those places gets in too big of hurry to get your money and they don,t pay any attention. that,s why i change my own oil.
There's more here than what you're saying. Didn't your father notice the oil warning lamp that came on when the oil pressure dropped? I doubt that there's any recourse here. Good luck.

Where is the oil filter and drain plug in an 06 volvo xc90?

Please helpWhere is the oil filter and drain plug in an 06 volvo xc90?
You have to remove the belly pan to access the drain plug. It will be obvious once the pan is off.

The oil filter is accessed from the engine bay under the hood. It's under a large plastic cover. You may need a special tool.

2004 VW Golf Oil Pan Drain Plug.?

I tried to change the oil on my 2004 VW Golf. The oil drain plug is not the usual type. It appears to require some type of allen or hex socket. Does anyone know the what exact tool that is needed. I don't want to use the wrong thing and risk ';rounding'; it out. Thanks. Sal2004 VW Golf Oil Pan Drain Plug.?
If it has 6 flat sides it is an allen head. If it is ';star shaped'; it is a Torx. VW often uses a 17mm allen head for engine and transmission plugs.

I have a shop and have all those. To save buying a bunch of tools, call your VW dealer service department and ask them what size to use. They should tell you.2004 VW Golf Oil Pan Drain Plug.?
My niece also owns a 2004 VW Golf. Apparently, these vehicles are designed to not be owner maintained. She takes it to the dealer for maintenance. Also, the transmission fluid unit is sealed you can't even check the auto transmission fluid yourself. What's with that?
Try using the head of a bolt to get the size, then measure the head with a socket to get the size in mm. This will give you the hex socket you need.
If you use an adjustable wrench you will be fine.

My 1996 saturn is leaking oil from either yhe oil pan or the drain plug. how can i be sure that is where it is?

coming from.My 1996 saturn is leaking oil from either yhe oil pan or the drain plug. how can i be sure that is where it is?
If there's only oil around your plug, it's the plug. If there's oil above that, it's coming from somewhere else. Or at least somewhere else too. Oil doesn't run uphill. Although it does tend to run backwards, from when you drive your car.My 1996 saturn is leaking oil from either yhe oil pan or the drain plug. how can i be sure that is where it is?
so if you know it is the pan or the plug do it step by step 1st take the plug out clean around the surfece relly good and install a new plug fill her back up with oil if you still have a leak then its ur pan.

My oil pan drain plug and oil pan threads were stripped..Can I reuse the oil I had to drain?

Well, now I have to drop the oil pan and replace it with a new one, which is a whole new battle... Hopefully I will not be posting issues with that later on.

Case and matter is that I just changed the oil and discovered the problem with the drain plug and oil pan. The threads on the oil pan were done, and I couldn't tap it anymore, so I had to get a new one. It's coming in soon. But because of that I had to drain the oil I just bought, and I was wondering if there were any risks to re-using that oil. My oil pan drain plug and oil pan threads were stripped..Can I reuse the oil I had to drain?
even though you think the container is clean you can still get dirt in it from under your car when you slide it under or form your hand hitting something when you break the plug loose. oil is cheaper than an engine just get newMy oil pan drain plug and oil pan threads were stripped..Can I reuse the oil I had to drain?
put in new clean oil, period, next invest in a good tap and die kit, or if you say youve tapped it too much then look into a helicoil kit, or a repair a thread, its called they sell them everywhere, its a metal stainless steel insert that has threads on the insides the exact same as your original bolt, so i can work again, its cheaper than a new pan
yes you can reuse the oil no problem. if the oil pan threads ever go again get a nut weld it around the hole and put a bolt in it make sure to use a fiber or copper washer
If the threads in the oil pan are stripped there is a possibility of having metal in the oil. My advice is to toss the oil and replace it,
Put it in a thin tray and run a magnet over it. That should get rid of any metal. Otherwise, you're good.
Try making a decision on what you see and what you know .
Just change the oil. You probably drained it in a dirty bucket. How much is oil $10 that is dirt cheap in comparison to what damage you could do to your engine.

Is it possible to drill a hole in an oil pan of a 2001 Firebird and put in a new drain plug?

The threads on my drain plug have been stripped and now the plug will not come out, it just spins. I've taken my car to 3 places and no one can get it out. Is there anything I can do to change my oil short of getting a new oil pan?Is it possible to drill a hole in an oil pan of a 2001 Firebird and put in a new drain plug?
What you can do is, weld the old plug just so it dont leak. Then get a tap and die set and make a new whole for any size plug.Very easy to do.Done it many times. My dad has been a mechanic for 30 yrs. A tap and die set isnt that expensive, and for that yea car its probbably easyer and cheaper than a new oil pan. you can get set that will do a good job for 15 bucks. RAYIs it possible to drill a hole in an oil pan of a 2001 Firebird and put in a new drain plug?
Yes but it would probably be cheaper to get a new oil pan
For a temp solution, find a station that has a dipstick suction setup. They can suction the oil out through the dipstick hole. They used to offer quick oil changes this way, while you gassed up.

If you try to drill a new drain plug opening you'll have nothing but problems. The oil pan is reinforced (thicker) where the current drain plug is located. If you drill a new hole, the pan will not be thick enough to hold a new self tapping plug and prevent a continuous leak.

To remove the old plug, try to force the tip of two small screw drivers under the head of the plug (180 degrees apart) as someone turns it to un-tighten it. Keep wegeing something between the pan and the plug until the threads start to grip.

If all else fails, drill out the old plug and replace it with a two or three oversize plug. Make sure you get the metal chips out, a magnet will help. They make over-sized plugs that are self tapping for just the problem you have. Also use a gasket around the new oversized plug and DON'T overtighten it. One more thing, they sell plugs with a magnet protruding into the oil, try to use one of these if they come in oversized plugs.

    Good Luck,

    Zack
I myself would not pull a jackleg fix to save a few bucks and have it screw me over later.... just replace the pan and feel safer about it.
i think that you would be taking a chance welding the old drain plug before you drain the old oil out. But it sounds like it may be worth a try to drill a hole in the pan to drain it 1st. then tac weld the old drain plug. Retap your new drain hole and go from there. Hey if it doesnt leak you fixed it. But if it does leak, then the new pan is the way to go. But at least you tried 1st
Well it sounds like a new oil pan. You need to actually pull the bolt at the same time turn it out and it may come. The place the old drain plug is is the lowest point in the pan and the oil must drain from that hole or you will not get it all out and leave crud in it every time you change the oil. So unless you get it out and re-thread the old bolt its not going to work. More than likely the last people to do the last oil change they were the ones who overtightened the plug for you. I would suggest letting them know. Maybe they will be honest and see what they can do.
i wouldn't even think about it, this car has an aluminum oil pan what u should do is drill the old drain plug out and then use a tap and dye set to fix the threads and put a new plug
Take it to the dealer for an Oil Change, see what they tell you, they just might get it out. The Boys at Jiffy Lube change Oil, not all of them may be mechanically inclined to get a stuck bolt out.

Whoever changed your oil last cranked that thing on there and they either did it on purpose, or it was that guys first oil change.

Also has some one attempted to remove it with an impact socket?? If I can remove rusted bolts from a 40 year old car with one I recommend giving it a try or have it done at the dealer, they may not charge you anything, and if they break the bolt they will have one in-stock to replace it.

I have a feeling your regular oil change places do not stock oil pan plugs, and then they would have to go ';get'; one for you if they broke it, and that will cost you alot more than a new hole or a new pan.

Its similar to them always trying to sell you a 40 dollar air-filter for your car that you can buy at Pep Boys for $12.95

    OK Done ranting.

  • Where is the drain plug/ tube on a 2003 Harley Davidson softail standard for changing oil?

I am going to change the oil on my softail and just want to know were to drain the oil from on the crank case!Where is the drain plug/ tube on a 2003 Harley Davidson softail standard for changing oil?
No,.. there is only one engine oil drain plug. Its on the frame on the lower right in front of the swingarm on the transmission trap door side. Its a tube that drains the oil tank. what little is actually in the crankcase is very minimal.

The other drain plug the other poster described is the PRIMARY case drain. The primary should be changed at the same time as the oil, and unless you are using something special it takes the same oil the motor takes. The primary is refilled at the small oval inspection cover w/ 4bolts. Takes 1 quart, and its assumed that during this service the primary chain is adjusted (tightened) while you have this cover off....or if you are adjusting the clutch simply pour it in the derby cover hole.Where is the drain plug/ tube on a 2003 Harley Davidson softail standard for changing oil?
There are two, one one the left of motor down on right side of primary cover( not much oil will come out). The second one is a drain hose coming off oil tank on right side of bike, just in front of the swing arm on top side of the bottom of frame. Be sure to take off oil tank and clean with kerosene, you are to flush oil tank every other time you change the oil.
Polar bear has some of it right. You do not have to change primary oil every time you change engine oil and, unless you are using the new synthetic oil, there are 3 different kinds of oil, Engine oil, tranny oil, and primary oil. Those 3 oils can only be used in their stated component. Tranny oil in the tranny and so forth. BTW, DO NOT remove the oil tank.
Well to be fair to Gina some Harleys most certainly do have an oil pan under the transmission. But Polarbear does have it right for the Softail model. And like he said there is no crankcase drain plug on factory cases.Gina i'll give you a thumbs up for trying. You just had the wrong model Harley.
Find your oil pan, underneath there will be a drain plug nut, be careful to not lose the small rubber seal when you remove it.
lol gina wasn't even close oil pan ? on a harley? lmfao polar bear has it all correct
Well Gina, you tried... kudos to you... but polarbear has it bang on

How to change Automatic oil I cannot see plug (bolt) to drain old oil,on KIA Rio car?.?

If you mean transmission fluid, you won't find a drain plug. The transmission pan is removed to drain the fluid, and at the same time, a new filter should be installed. Reassemble the pan using a new gasket. How to change Automatic oil I cannot see plug (bolt) to drain old oil,on KIA Rio car?.?
HOLD ON !! Kias take a special type of trans fluid that only comes from a Kia, Hyundai or Mitsu dealer. PLEASE Check the owners manual. Then. There is a drain plug on the bottom of the transaxle. It is a 12mm allen head bolt. It is on the drivers side, towards the rear and goes in horizontal, sideways. Google image Kia transaxle drainplug. How to change Automatic oil I cannot see plug (bolt) to drain old oil,on KIA Rio car?.?
I'm surprised it doesn't have a drain plug. Hondas, Toyotas and Subarus have them. But since it's Korean, it may not. This is a major mistake by the American auto makers, there should be a plug. It is inferior engineering not to have one.
The pan has to be removed and the filter needs to be changed at the same time.

Where is the oil filter and drain plug on my honda trx 500 foreman rubicon?

I never used a rubicon before, but if they are anything like the 450 foreman fm's, the drain plug is around the bottom left front of the engine, if you tilt the atv you should see a 17 mm bolt, thats the drain bolt. The oil filter is on the right side of the engine right above the end of the brake lever. You should see a circular cover with 3, 8 mm size bolts, that's where the filter is, at least that's where they are on my 450 foreman. Hope this helps :)

I'm Changing the oil in my 2003 Honda VTX 1800C and the oil won't drain from the drain plug..just drips?

The dip stick shows it overfull but I know it's not because I changed the oil last fall. Does anybody know what I should do or what has caused this problem? Thank you.I'm Changing the oil in my 2003 Honda VTX 1800C and the oil won't drain from the drain plug..just drips?
So you have removed the oil drain plug and it only drips out?

You either have too little oil in the bike or you have not removed the proper drain plug all though this seems unlikely.

I have had bikes for 25 years and this has never happened to me as it's a rather basic operation to perform.

I don't see this as a problem but more of a symptom of either very very thick oil, very cold outside temperatures or almost no oil in the bike.

You should be able to drain almost the same amount that you refill it with.I'm Changing the oil in my 2003 Honda VTX 1800C and the oil won't drain from the drain plug..just drips?
Drive the vehicle for 15 minutes or so. Then, let the car sit for another 30 minutes for the oil to change from hot to warm. The oil will be warm and it will flow more easily.

The problem might also be that there is no way for air to enter the system to replace the oil you are trying to remove, even with the dip stick removed. When draining the oil, remove the oil filler cap, usually located on the top most portion of the engine.
Perhaps something is in the way of the oil flow. Put your finger or pencil in the hole and see if that helps.

What is the tork spec on a 96 grand am oil pan drain plug? Please don't say hand tight?

well, i always use evan ft-lbs. in your case i would suggest ';jag'; ft-lbs.What is the tork spec on a 96 grand am oil pan drain plug? Please don't say hand tight?
There's probably a factory spec but I have always just gone snug with a wrench. It won't leak and it's easier to remove next time. They have a tendency to lock in over time so snug gives a consistant start point for me. IMHO...

Is a brass washer more suitable than steel for use as an oil pan drain plug washer?

Brass is a softer metal and is more suitable because it will ';mold'; and fit the space between the drain bolt and the oil pan better than a steel washer. If you must use something other than brass, use stainless steel as it will not rust as rapidly as plain steel, a tertiary choice would be galvanized steel. In any event if you need to use something other than brass, it should be replace asap with brass.

good luckIs a brass washer more suitable than steel for use as an oil pan drain plug washer?
Yup.Is a brass washer more suitable than steel for use as an oil pan drain plug washer?
Actually I would prefer copper to brass or steel. The copper is more malleable. This allows it to better conform to irregular surfaces that are prone to leakage.
a fiber washer is what most dealers us as a replacement
Yes, the softer brass will form to the irregular surface better than the steel. Less chance of a leak.

I am sure you know not to over tighten.
Neither is better. Both are suitable provided you put a nylon washer in front of either one. By the way where's the O.E.M. plug, its the best due to the magnet on the end of it to collect metal shards.

Are metal washers better than plastic washers for oil drain plugs?

Which one lasts more longer? Are metal washers better than plastic washers for oil drain plugs?
It depends who does your oil changes you are jiffy lube if you do it then metal if jiffy lube does it no washer,Are metal washers better than plastic washers for oil drain plugs?
I never much cared for the copper or plastic ones myself. I prefer the fiber ones, as they are better able to mold themselves to seal any imperfections. They don't last as long, but they do the job they're supposed to do, better than the others. Rubber ones work pretty good too, but they pretty much only last one time around. I have used an O-ring in a pinch though.
a metal washer wont seal it, you need a rubber washer

Do all the magnetic oil drain plugs have a gasket on them?

I have a 99 gmc sierra and dont know what to buy please helpDo all the magnetic oil drain plugs have a gasket on them?
I disagree with offroadj. Metal to metal is not a good seal and I have never seen an oil drain plug without a gasket of some kind. Most have a nylon washer and most auto parts stores sell various sizes of them.Do all the magnetic oil drain plugs have a gasket on them?
no, not all oil drain plugs have a gasket on them, in fact most do not

Why do shots use air tools on oil drain plugs sometimes?

Took two people get it off by hand. Why do shots use air tools on oil drain plugs sometimes?
#1 it is quick. #2 they don't care if it causes you problems after you get out of their sight. #3 if it ruins draniplug, or strips out threads in pan, - it is your problem not theirs!

#4 Air impact/ratchets sound ';neat'; when you run them!

I would remember where the plug was put in that tight, and not go back there anymore! I would also give them a call and let them know you aren't too happy!!

Watch it when you have new tires put on at shop too! They love to tighten bolts so tight, - that it either breaks the studs, lug-wrench,- or you can't get them off at all, -- causing it to have to be towed to shop and taken of with an air impact/ratchet again! Best to take out in parking lot, and see if you can loosen them with lug wrench, -- if not make them loosen them and put on with lugwrench, -- so you can get them off with lugwrench! It is ';rather inconvenient'; if you have a flat, and can't get wheel off!Why do shots use air tools on oil drain plugs sometimes?
because they are concerned about quantity and not quality. i worked in the lube industry for 14 years and i know some of the ins and outs of that business. at the same time i also know many of the toque specifications for the drain plugs. if it took two people to pull that little plug out, i see one of two things being there, and one is just comical.

    1) the two guys were little weaklings that could not fight there own shadow and win

    2) drain plug is over torqued to the point of damaging the oil pan.

as i said the second is a more than likely possibility. do you remember where the last oil change was done. you might want to go back and have a talk with the service writter. as i said before you may have oil pan damage. i can not be sure and it does not sound like it yet, but somethings take time.
Because they don't care it's not their car...

You should take it to a different shop and ask them to not over tighten the plug. Or they make a plug that you can buy that you dont have to be taken out to drain the oil. They sell them at your local parts store. check out the source.
Because its quick. They usually over tighten them which will cause them to leak over time.
Cause their pansy's! Naw if you got em use em! Just tighten by hand.

  • Oil leaking drain plug?

Can an oil plug 'work' itself out after a week from an oil change if it's not tightened properly?Oil leaking drain plug?
Oh yeah.. That happened to me when I worked at a gas station. I got distracted because we were busy so I quit changing oil and helped pump gas, went back to the car and forgot to tighten the oil plug. The next day the owner wasn't happy about it. so, yeah it can and did happen.

I didn't work there long after that, either.Oil leaking drain plug?
    absolutley!
It is possible the hole is slightly worn, and needs a slightly oversized self-tapping replacement plug. It is also possible that the gasket needs replacing.
The plug not being properly torqued may cause this, however I would look for a worn washer as the cause.
get a new nylon or neoprene drain plug gsaket for your plug from the auto parts store. torque your drain plug 15-20 foot pounds, so give it a good final turn. next time you change your oil put the new drain plug seal on. should be changed every 4-6 oil changes.
    sure, it probably could.
I don,t know who changed your oil last however always check for leaks whenever you get your oil changed most of the time the drain plug is put back real tight so if you are leaking oil check to make sure it is tight and not cross threaded, good luck
Yes, but most likely the plug itself is bad. You can buy new ones at autozone or your car dealer.
it can,if its not completely tight.better make sure the threads are not stripped out.

WRX leaking oil from drain plug?

I had a leaking drain plug which was missing the gasket. I replaced it and it is still leaking just a little. What should I do?WRX leaking oil from drain plug?
take to shopWRX leaking oil from drain plug?
WHat did you replace the gasket with? If it is not a material rated for oil, it will leak.

Try using a copper crush gasket. These can be obtained at any auto or hardware store.

If this does not work, the threads of the plug or hole may be an issue. Yuu can replace the plug bolt as well.

If none of these provide a solution, the pan may be bent, or the plug hole threads may be damaged. If you do not want to replace your oil pan, you can tap the threads out to a larger plug.
Did you replace the whole drain plug or just the gasket? Either way that should have taken care of your problem. If you haven't replaced the plug then I'd do that and make sure it's snug. Maybe the threads are messed up a little bit and are not allowing the plug to get completely tight. You could run a thread chaser just to make sure that the threads are ok.

I have a 91 honda accord the pan leaks oil from drain plug how can i fix this without changing the pan.?

The right way to fix it, would be to tap to the next size plug and replace it with a bolt if you have to. You need to size and buy a cheap tap to cut new threads. You may be able to get a thread chaser and chase it first and see if that takes care of it. Another approach would be to buy some high temp silicone, like a gasket maker and apply it to your threads before reinstalling your plug after oil changes. We have used this technique successfully on other machinery. Good luck.I have a 91 honda accord the pan leaks oil from drain plug how can i fix this without changing the pan.?

auto zone sells drain plugs, the kind that makes its own threads, get 1 of those and it will retap its own threads.
I used to own a '93 Honda, where I made friends with the a Honda service manager. I had that same problem. He told me, Honda dealers have a temporary oil pan kit for about $30 bucks. Which I had done. It lasted a while, 'til I gave the car to a friend. But keep in mind, it's a ';temporary'; kit. It's should to last for about six months, 'til you can fix right.
You will need to get an oversize drain pan plug at Auto Zone, it will self tap into the pan, after you install it remove it and use a magnet to feel around the hole just in case any metal particles are there. Its not to likely but better safe than sorry, Good Luck and God Bless
You didn't say if the thread has stripped out, that is, the plug just rotated without tightening.

If it is stripped, an oversize plug can be used. If it seems to tighten OK, my guess is it's just the washer. New washer, or...

These days, I use plumbers' teflon thread tape exclusively when changing oil. Fits all cars, will not leak, but needs to be properly used. Properly means winding the tape onto the plug in such a direction (clockwise, looking at the inside end of the plug) a sufficient number of times to take up the slack in the thread. I also then wind further turns, allowing the tape to roll itself into a round shape, around the plug against the flange. When you tighten it in, just tighten it hard enough to compress this tape under the flange, and enough it cannot wind itself out (of course). The teflon will actually help to stop this happening.

It could also be you have a crack near the plug in the pan. If replacing the plug/ gasket does not stop oil escaping, look carefully around the fitting in the pan. Cracking can be caused by impact, or by over- tightening the plug. If cracked, it will need replacement or repair by welding (or even soldering?).
Really not much you can do..I had the same problem and just replaced the oil pan
ok easy fix you can one of two things go to the auto parts bin and get a teflon washer and or a o ring would do just fine and those should'nt cost more than a dollar and should take you 20 minutes to fix if it is the threads then change the pan sorry but good luck
    okokk
try checking the gasket on the drain plug and replace it if it looks damaged. or you can replace both the drainplug and gasket which costs about 5 dollars. if that doesn't work. theres a chance that you might've crooss threaded the pan and, unfortunately, have to replace the pan.
Replace drain plug and gasket/washer. If that doesn't work, resurface the face of the female port because the gasket/washer on the drain plug may not be seating properly.

  • Oil leak from motorcycle drain plug?

I changed the oil on my CBR about 300 miles ago. I replaced the crush washer on the drain plug as well. Ever since then there has been a slow leak of oil from the drain plug. Wherever I park the bike overnight there will always be a puddle of oil right under the plug, and the plug is also slick to the touch. How can I fix this?Oil leak from motorcycle drain plug?
There maybe a bit of debri (dirt) under the washer. Then it wont seal right even with a new washer. Next oil change, make sure the surfaces are clean. It would be rare that the plug or the base may have a nick large enough cause the leak.Oil leak from motorcycle drain plug?
You may have to get an over-sized self tapping plug and replace the one you have there. Also, you might want to consider something like this: http://www.fumotovalve.com
Plumbers' teflon thread tape. From your local hardware store.
did you check to see if the drain plug gasket is on the plug?if its gone, maybe you could either make a gasket or buy one.

Oil pan drain plug cross threaded?

is there a trick that can help it back out. because it keeps spinning in place. and im trying to avoid ';Tapping'; it.Oil pan drain plug cross threaded?
Use vice grips. Grasp the head, turn counterclockwise as you pull out. Use BIG vise grips, very tightly applied, and pull hard. There are auto threading replacement plugs you can buy.Oil pan drain plug cross threaded?
    What the first guy said.

You may need a new oil pan once you finally get the plug out because the hole will have new grooves which oil will be able to leak out from. Should maybe cost you no more than $100 for a new pan...installed yourself.
Try grabbing hold of it with set of vise grip pliers. Pull out on the plug at the same time you unscrew it.

Drain Car Oil without a Drain plug in the oil pan.?

Do I have to remove the entire oil pan to drain the oil when there is no drain plug in it? I dont want to remove all 30 bolts.Drain Car Oil without a Drain plug in the oil pan.?
EVERYONE IS WRONG there is not a drain plug on some foreign cars or expencive cars such as mercedes or bentlys for these kind of applicatiuons you have to buy the tool that will remove the oil through the dip stickDrain Car Oil without a Drain plug in the oil pan.?
No You can get hold of a small pump that you can connect to your drill. You then connect small pvc tube to each side of the pump, one side being small enough to slide down the dip stick pipe and then push it down lower enough to go into the bottom of the sump.

Then start your drill and it will suck out all the oil
what kind of car are you working on. i have been doing that for, well approaching 300, 000 cars and i have never seen a car that did not have a drain plug, a boat sure, bot not a car. you could possibly use a small hose through the dipstick tube to suck it out with a pump like you would on a boat.
If we knew what kind of car it is it would help!!

But however if you know THIS LITTLE about cars, meaning you cant find the drain plug you better find a Jiffy Lube and fork out the extra cash to watch someone more knowledgable do it.
If you cannot find the drain plug, you should get help to change the oil the first time.

It is best to ';learn'; the correct way. I am sure you have a friend or neighbor that would help you.
There's always drain plug for ENGINE OIL. If you can't find it, you are looking at the wrong place (like on the tranny).

Keep looking, otherwise you will be draining the wrong oil.

    Good Luck...
the oil pan is deep and rectangular and will have a drain plug. The trans pan is not as deep and allot more p shaped i think you are looking at the trans pan.
Pay attention to sean r and Fitzy they are both correct. You may be better to have this change done by the dealer because the correct tooling might take time aquire.
There's one there somewhere. Usually at the lowest place.

If you still can't find it go to someplace that'll change your and watch them.
Like everyone says there is always a drain plug. Get a book or get an oil change and learn.

What's a good tool to take off my car's oil drain plug? it's so friggin' stubborn...?

i'm trying to change the oil on my '97 saturn sc2, and this is my first time doing it since i bought the car from someone a little while back.

my socket set didn't even go up to the plug's size (highest was 1/2';, the plug is a little bigger, go figure!). i went and bought a wrench, but it was one of the adjustable ones (with the little wheel thing on it to make the wrench wider or smaller). THAT didn't work; the wrench ended up just turning on the plug, even with me twisting as hard as i can lol (and yes, i'm turning it counter-clockwise).

would i be better off just getting some bigger sockets? socket wrench seems like the best one to use....

thanks! i'm kinda new at all this. What's a good tool to take off my car's oil drain plug? it's so friggin' stubborn...?
go get the proper socket for your ratchet set and if need be you can get a piece of pipe and put it over the ratchet handle for extra leverage to get the bolt loose. What's a good tool to take off my car's oil drain plug? it's so friggin' stubborn...?
It's most likely a metric size; any where from 12mm to 15mm. If the plug is stripped, as you dicribed, use a pair of vise grips. When you put the plug back in the oil pan; first, get a new plug, and only tighten it as much as you can using YOU FINGERS ONLY. ( the heat from the engine oil wil cause the plug to expand and the plug will pretty much secure it self. REMEBER: Tighten the plug only hand tight.)
Truth is that if you take it into a local oil change place they can pull the plug and give you a new one. Valvoline does it for free or at least used to but in this case it would cost you the price of the oil change which is about $30.
My husband about killed my dad for using a socket to change the oil on my car. A wrench is what you should use, not an adjustable one. My car takes a 15mm wrench.
it probably takes a metric socket. if you cant get it,use a 6 point socket and a cheater pipe.
Don't use a crescent wrench on any bolt unless you really have to. If you don't tighten it enough, you will round the bolt and they are just a pain to use anyway. Go get a good set of sockets. Most that you buy will last the rest of your life. If the bolt still wont come off try using a breaker bar(get a round tube and put it around the socket handle so you get more leverage) and when you put the plug back in, dont tighten it that tight. You want it tight enough that it wont come out while you are driving but not so tight that you may damage the oil pan or threads.
